The Quiet A Novella Newly Revised and Expanded eBook Robert S Wilson
This is the second piece of fiction I have read from Robert S. Wilson. Overall I gave it 3 stars. I absolutely loved the set up and was wondering where it was going...then he brought the main character's ride to a halt. That's where a lot of the reviewers here at Amazon started crying. I believe this is one of Wilson's earlier works and so he is entitled to a few skid marks. The big complaint I see from others is that he leaves you with too many questions. For me, that's not a problem. I like my fiction to be realistic. If this actually happened, everything would not be explained to you.Wilson does leave us wondering in the end and I like that. It does read like the beginning of something much bigger. I would love to see what "James" ran into next.
Overall, it's not perfect, but it's a nice quick read. Well worth a couple bucks.

The Quiet A Novella Newly Revised and Expanded eBook Robert S Wilson Reviews
What a shame. This little story had all the makings of a great read, then the reading began. I give a great deal of credit to the author for the idea behind this novella. I think he could have made a killing either by selling the idea to a good writer, or by becoming a good writer before he embarked on writing it. I have never read such a clumsy, lurching, disjointed story. I TRULY thought that this must have been written by a kid but then I read Mr. Wilson's bio. There was actually one sentence(?) in the story that was so poorly written that it actually made me laugh. I read it to my wife and she chuckled too. I realize that I sound like an jerk here and I don't mean to. I'm just attempting to give an honest review, without including any "spoilers". I actually would really like to read a redo of this story, providing the author engaged in a bit of character development and didn't rely on grossly improbable dreams to explain EXACTLY what was going on. (Well, at least the "hero" knew exactly what was going on, although it was never clearly explained to the reader.) I also think that, even as a novella, this story was FAR too short and was literally crammed into a ridiculously short period of literary time. The course of the story would have been FAR more believable and probable if it had taken place over a matter of weeks, or at least several days.......not just a day or so. So many things just didn't make sense and could NEVER have happened "over night". Too many incredible things were left completely unexplained and too many important points were left just dangling as well. One last thing, and I wish I could ask the author this question directly; has Mr. Wilson ever actually driven a car? So much of this story took place with "James", the main character, driving around on roads cluttered with abandoned, wrecked, and burning cars, WITH THE GAS PEDAL FLOORED. It was a recurring description. At one point this average guy was negotiating a highway that, while mostly empty, STILL had the occasional empty car sitting here and there, and he was doing it in the dark and at 120 miles per hour!!?? Sorry. A professorial race car driver couldn't do that without wrecking his/her car, let alone an average driver. An average driver couldn't do it at 50 MPH. Again, this novella was based on a great premise but was a truly disappointing read. It was like eating a really good chocolate cake ........before it was baked.........one ingredient at a time.
I enjoyed this piece immensely. The story was unpredictable in many wonderful ways. I think a lot of people wonder what type of end of the world scenarios could happen, why, and how they would react. This book has it all in there. I enjoyed the author's take on these questions. I have only one complaint. I wanted more...This could be much more than a novella, but at the same time it was complete unto itself. Wonderful!
This had a lot of potential, but fell way short of living up to it. The main characters actions aren't entirely believable, at times it's hard to tell how much time has passed between one event and another, except that it was definitely too long, considering all the time he wasted just driving around looking at nothing new. By the time he got drowsy from the monotony, I was right there with him. And the ending was just weird. I'm so glad I didn't pay for this.
I thought I was in for a treat as the story held my interest initially. The story is well written but moves too quickly the farther you get into the book. I feel the plot falls apart towards the end moving at the speed of light it seems very jerky and all over the place. Then ending for me just ruined the story. It was just too off the wall for my taste. Summary Starts out well, the author can write, loses steam as it progresses. I would give another of the authors books a shot.
An interesting and a little creepy little novella, felt like a Twilight Zone episode. It does a good job of ramping up quickly and giving you what you need to get into the story. It left me wondering how the hell everyone died; I mean not even a drop of blood or speck of dust?? I don't think I liked the ending; the end of humanity was certain, it was just a matter how long it would take. It doesn't leave you with a warm and fuzzy, just like the Twilight Zone.
Although this is categorized as a Novella, it felt more like a short story with no actual plot. As for being titled THE QUIET, I don't feel that the quiet actually lasted all that long in the story. It wasn't a terrible story to read and if you're looking for something dark and strange but quick reading, this would be a good pick. It's not plagued with spelling or grammatical errors but in all honesty, it's certainly not one of the best I've ever read either. Note The rating stars on GoodReads is 2 Stars = It's ok.
This novella really disappointed me in that it had potential but ended up being too unbelievable for me to enjoy. Although short, it would not have suffered by being even shorter. Editing errors and omissions were present throughout, but I didn't find them to be as problematic as the flawed premise and ending. It is impossible to tell you why they are flawed and unbelievable because doing so would give away the entire book...so I won't. If you are curious, read it and really consider what it is saying, then you tell me...flawed or not? By the way, I got it when it was free, you might want to do the same.
